Well, so here's a real test of hospitality? We arrived on the offchance at 1250 on a Sunday lunchtime, not having booked or visited the Rising Sun before. It was... read more clearly bustling at the peak of its Sunday lunchtime service so we were quite prepared to be shown the door.
Not a bit of it. The Landlord welcomed us in and found a side table free near a cosy wood-burning stove, but on the basis that we would have to be in and out in an hour before the next booking arrived. That suited us fine.
We both ordered a Ploughman's lunch on the basis it was reasonably priced and should arrive fairly quickly. Excellent service from very friendly staff, and the food was a revelation, probably the best Ploughman's we'd had in many years.
Freshly cooked home-made scotch egg with a lovely runny yolk, generous wedge of Cheddar, freshly cut ham and two different pickles. Chunks of fresh bread plus lovely pickled onions and a leaves garnish, washed down with beautifully-kept Dark Star bitter. Wonderful!
If this is the standard of service a common-or-garden "walk-in" can expect at the busiest time of the week, it's a real credit to the Landlord and staff, especially after what must have been an awful two years.
The Rising Sun is off the beaten track, but well worth the effort. Thanks for your great hospitality and, as they say, "THAT's the way to do it"!!
