Welcome to the Rising Sun

An award winning village local in the heart of unspoilt South Downs National Park countryside renowned for its outstanding atmosphere, great food, well kept ales, long and varied wine list and charming staff. Stylishly refurbished, spacious and light and with vast gardens and terraces adorned with teak tables and parasols, this is a pub for all seasons and all occasions.

Covid19 – Second Phase Reopening – Early September Onwards
A message to our customers.

Thank you for bearing with us during the first phase of our reopening. The feedback we’ve had has been generally excellent and we’ve achieved what we set out to do; reopen safely and create a fun summer ambience with great food and a varied drinks menu. Service has been occasionally sluggish (particularly during the discount period) and the technology we adopted has not always performed as well as we wished so we are grateful for your patience and courtesy.

The second phase of reopening is being adopted now as summer calms down, the discount scheme concludes, the kids go back to school and the weather becomes more autumnal. The key changes you will experience are:

  • The reopening of the main pub bar as a ‘Quick Bar’ serving all the draught beers and ciders, all the house wines (those by the glass), some soft drinks and some spirits. Payment will be by debit or credit card only.
  • There will be one or two tables available for drinkers inside, on a first come first served basis but we will continue to encourage drinkers to be seated at all times so for most that will mean taking your drinks outside.
  • The rear garden and marquee will remain our dining space during this phase but we will be stopping ‘order on your phone’ and returning to waiters taking orders on your behalf. You will still get full table service and we will encourage you to order from our waiting staff and not use the inside bar. Payment will be by debit or credit card only.
  • Drinkers wishing to order from a more extensive drinks list can use their phones in the front garden or take a table in the rear dining area (subject to availability).
  • It is our view that the pandemic is some way from being under control so this relaxing of rules must be absorbed in the context of continued social distancing and frequent hand sanitizing. If you have any concerns please raise them with the management.
  • All these changes will have been implemented by the second week of September.

Look out for news of our Third Phase Reopening where plans for autumn and winter will be revealed, in October.

I am not prone to gushing emails, but hell, last night’s date night dinner was top drawer. Can’t quite see how you’re making any money on it – and would have happily paid more for delicious beef – really well cooked. Dauphinoise so good my wife wants you guys to make trays of the stuff for the freezer. Your pepper sauce was the crowning glory in my humble opinion. Rocket salad is the Riser tour de force – what can I say – the tomatoes (I can live without!) and the ’shroom – earthy and delicious. Drinkable Malbec, criminally rich pudding – it was all completely delicious, made very easy and exceptional value.
